His research interests include recurrent neural networks, circuits/systems and algorithms for machine learning, compressive sensing and statistical signal processing, biomedical circuits and systems, design and implementation of IoT nodes, and hardware security. He has co-authored over 280 in scientific publications in books, journals and conference proceedings. He received the 2013 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) Meritorious Service Award, the 2004 IEEE CASS Darlington Award, the 2013 IEEE CASS Guillemin Cauer Award and the 2019 IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems Best Paper award, in addition to several others best paper awards at major IEEE Conferences. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE (class of 2006) “for contributions to application of nonlinear dynamics to communications, signal processing, and information technology.”

He was the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems – Part II (2006-2007), the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems – Part I (2008-2009) and he is currently the EIC of the Proceedings of the IEEE (the first non from USA since 1909). He was the General Chair or Technical Program Chair of several conferences, including IEEE ISCAS and IEEE BioCAS. He was also the 2010 President of the IEEE CAS Society and the 2013-2014 IEEE Vice President for Publication Services and Products (first scientist not from North America to serve in that role).
